Legendary promoter, direct marketer and cutting edge innovator

I’ve known Bill for at least a decade, maybe two. For 35 years, Bill Bakula has been a force in entertainment, direct marketing, business and technology. While famously known as the marketing expert behind the iconic psychic, Walter Mercado, just in entertainment alone, Bill has organized over 2,000 live shows for luminaries such as Pearl Jam, Ray Charles, Nirvana and, one of my favorites, Echo and the Bunnymen. Bill also orchestrated the Rolling Stones’ concert in Cuba.

A moment that defined you professionally: As a young guy working at Channel 7 in Miami he saw that technology would soon leave him without a job (at the time, editing content). So he organized a few friends, hit the grandparents of those friends, who owned several theaters in Miami Beach, and created a live event company –Bam Bam Productions—using the empty theaters in Miami Beach owned by those grandparents.

One change you could have never imagined: The incredibly quick adoption of Bitcoin. “I wrote the white paper in 2006 previewing the creation of a diamond-based digital currency which I called ADAMAS, for the Greek word for the hardest substance.” But Bill never imagined the quick adoption of Crypto and Bitcoin.

Coping with that change: Acquiring, digitizing, and monetizing artwork, paintings and sports memorabilia, and selling it in affordable units –which he calls Pixels—with the utility being the possibility of winning the actual asset. This makes art and expensive sports memorabilia affordable and accessible to everyone.

One word of advice to a CEO looking to hire: You can’t hire experience. Who are you going to hire? The person who’s done it 100 times or the person who’s only done it once? Hire the person with experience and then let that person hire everyone else needed to support the project. But you can’t buy experience.
